First-year linebacker Michael Thompson (No. 51) made a name for himself with Reading Express fans during the team's opener against the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks last night. Thompson posted four tackles on the evening, and his second-half interception was one of the biggest defensive plays on the night for the Express. He led a unit that was very effective against the run, holding the Steelhawks to just 39 yards on the ground.
Thompson was instrumental in helping a defense re-group after allowing two quick touchdowns to the Steelhawks to start the game.
"We had to realize what got us through camp," said Thompson. "That’s focusing, mental toughness and being a family and respecting each other. We have each other’s backs. After we got that down, everything fell into place.”
At the end, the Express topped the Steelhawks 33-26.
Thompson's play makes him
The Reading Hospital Medical Group Player of the Week.
